Can sexual problems be cured?
The success of treatment for sexual dysfunction depends on the
underlying cause of the problem. The outlook is good for dysfunction
that is related to a treatable or reversible physical condition.
Mild dysfunction that is related to stress, fear, or anxiety often
can be successfully treated with counseling, education, and improved
communication between partners.
Can sexual problems be prevented?
While sexual problems cannot be prevented, dealing with the
underlying causes of the dysfunction can help you better understand
and cope with the problem when it occurs. There are some things you
can do to help maintain good sexual function:
- Quit smoking.
- Limit your alcohol intake.
- Increase communication with your partner.
- Follow your doctor's treatment plan for any medical/health
conditions.
- Deal with any emotional or psychological issues such as
stress, depression, and anxiety. Get treatment as needed.
When should I call my doctor?
Many men experience a problem with sexual function from time to
time. However, when the problems are persistent, they can cause
distress for the man and his partner, and have a negative impact on
their relationship. If you consistently experience sexual function
problems, see your doctor for evaluation and treatment.
What causes sexual problems?
Sexual dysfunction can be a result of a physical or psychological
problem.
Physical causes -
Many physical and/or medical conditions can cause problems with
sexual function. These conditions include diabetes, heart and
vascular (blood vessel) disease, neurological disorders, hormonal
imbalances, chronic diseases such as kidney or liver failure, and
alcoholism and drug abuse. In addition, the side effects of certain
medications, including some antidepressant drugs, can affect sexual
desire and function.
Psychological causes -
These include work-related stress and anxiety, concern about sexual
performance, marital or relationship problems, depression, feelings
of guilt, and the effects of a past sexual trauma.
Who is affected by sexual
problems?
Both men and women are affected by sexual problems. Sexual problems
occur in adults of all ages. Among those commonly affected are those
in the geriatric population, which may be related to a decline in
health associated with aging.
How do sexual problems affect men?
The most common sexual problems in men are ejaculation disorders,
erectile dysfunction, and inhibited sexual desire.

Other culprits
Prostatitis.
This inflammation of the prostate gland can be either acute
(usually caused by a bacterial infection) or chronic (usually
not caused by an infectious agent). Symptoms include pain
during urination, more frequent urination, and — possibly — a
discharge from the penis or fever. Severe prostatitis can
cause erectile dysfunction directly. In milder forms, the
condition can produce painful ejaculation, which can certainly
interfere with sexual pleasure and may lead to erectile
dysfunction. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to treat
the problem, but it can take several weeks for the infection
to clear and for normal erections to return.
Peyronie's
disease.
In this uncommon disorder, some of the connective tissue
inside the penis thickens, causing the penis to bend at an
angle when erect. When the condition affects the tissue
involved in erections, it can cause erectile dysfunction.
Peyronie's disease is most common in men over age 40. Many
treatments — including oral vitamin E, verapamil injections,
and ultrasound — have been tried, but their effectiveness is
uncertain, in part because the problem sometimes improves on
its own. When the problem is severe enough to cause pain
during intercourse or prevent penetration, surgery may be
needed to straighten the penis.
Injury.
An injury to any of the nerves and arteries necessary for an
erection can lead to erectile dysfunction. A pelvic fracture
can cause these kinds of injuries because many nerves and
arteries run along the pelvic bones. In addition, injury to
the brain, spinal cord, abdomen, or, of course, the penis can
impair nerves or blood vessels involved in erections. Such a
problem may be temporary or permanent, depending on the
severity of the injury. Even something as commonplace as
prolonged exercising on a rowing machine or bicycling on a
seat that's too hard can cause erectile dysfunction by
injuring some of the nerves or arteries in and around the
penis, in many cases, cutting back
on such forms of exercise or, for example, switching to a
softer, wider bicycle seat will solve the problem.
Do
not suffer in silence!
More then 100 Million men are affected with erectile
dysfunction world wide. Unfortunately majority of them suffer
silently with their condition and do not prefer to discuss
with any one. Erectile dysfunction can have profound physical
and psychological impact on an individual, leading to loss of
self esteem, increased anxiety and depression. Furthermore
isolation and emotional withdrawal may adversely affect a
man's relationship with his partner.
For centuries, sexual problems has been presumed to be the result of
mental (or psychogenic)
disorders, and countless millions of patients have either undergone
ineffective psychiatric treatment, and many people do not know that,
in most cases physical rather
than psychological causes are responsible for impotence. In 80-90
percent of cases of chronic impotence, the cause is not in the mind
but in the body and if a person is "YOUNG
AT HEART" physical improvement can be obtainable and he
can enjoy sexual bliss throughout the life.
It is now well understood that sexual health is a very important
component of overall well-being.

What is Erectile
Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction
occurs when a man has repeated problems sustaining
an erection. Without treatment, ED can make sexual
intercourse difficult. The condition, sometimes
called impotence. |
|
|
|
|
The
Mechanics of ED
An erection occurs
when blood fills two chambers known as the corpora
cavernosa. This causes the penis to expand and
stiffen, much like a balloon as it is filled with
water. The process is triggered by impulses from
the brain and genital nerves. Anything that blocks
these impulses or restricts blood flow to the
penis can result in ED. |
|
|
|
|
Who Gets ED?
ED
becomes more common as men age, but it is not a
part of aging. At age 40, about 5% of men
experience ED. At age 65, this number jumps to
between 15% and 25%. But this does not mean
growing older is the end of your sex life. ED can
be treated at any age. |
|
|
|
|
Causes of ED
The link between
chronic disease and ED is most striking for
diabetes, nearly one out of every two men with
diabetes experiences ED. Other conditions that may
cause ED include cardiovascular disease,
atherosclerosis (weakness of arteries), kidney
disease, and multiple sclerosis. These illnesses
can impair blood flow or nerve impulses throughout
the penis. |
|
|
|
|
Symptoms of ED
Erections that is too soft for sex. Erections that
last only briefly. An inability to achieve
erections. These symptoms may occur every time sex
is initiated or only some of the time. |
|
|
|
Psychological
Causes
ED usually has
something physical behind it, particularly in
older men. But psychological factors may be to
blame in 10% to 20% of men with ED. Experts say
stress, depression, poor self-esteem, and
performance anxiety can short-circuit the process
that leads to an erection. These factors can also
make the problem worse in men whose ED stems from
something physical. |
|
|
|
|
Tips to reduce risk of ED
Stop smoking. Avoid
alcohol and substance abuse. Keep your diabetes
under control. Exercise and maintain a healthy
weight. |
|
|
|
|
Causes of Lifestyle for ED
Lifestyle choices
that impair blood circulation can contribute to
ED. Smoking, excessive drinking, and drug abuse
may damage the blood vessels and reduce blood flow
to the penis. Smoking makes men particularly
vulnerable to ED. Being overweight and getting too
little exercise are other possible risk factors. |
|
|
|
|
ED:
A Sign of Heart Disease?
In some cases, ED can
be a warning sign of more serious disease. A 2010
study suggests ED is a strong predictor of heart
attack, stroke, and death from cardiovascular
disease. The researchers say all men diagnosed
with ED should be evaluated for cardiovascular
disease. This does not mean every man with ED will
develop heart disease, or that every man with
heart disease has ED, but patients should be aware
of the link. |
|
|
|
|
Treating ED: By Lifestyle Changes
Many men with ED are
able to improve sexual function by making a few
lifestyle changes. Giving up smoking, losing
weight, and exercising more often can help by
improving blood flow. If you suspect a medication
could be contributing to ED, talk to your doctor
about adjusting your dosage or switching to
another option. |
|
|
|
|
ED
and Bicycling
Research suggests
avid cyclists suffer more ED than other athletes.
The trouble lies in the shape of some bicycle
seats that put pressure on the perineum. This area
between the anus and scrotum contains arteries and
nerves vital to sexual arousal. Cyclists who ride
for many hours each week may benefit from seats
designed to protect the perineum. |
|
|
|
|
Discussing ED with Your Partner
It's natural to feel
angry or embarrassed when dealing with ED. But
don't forget that your partner is also affected.
Talking openly about ED will help your partner
understand the diagnosis and treatment options.
This will reassure your partner that you haven't
lost interest. |
|
|
|
|
ED
vs. Poor Libido
There are several
forms of male sexual dysfunction, including poor
libido and problems with ejaculation. But ED
refers specifically to problems achieving or
maintaining an erection. Men with ED often have a
healthy libido, yet the body fails to respond. In
most cases, there is a physical basis for the
problem |
